Power Plant Wastewater Treatment System
Stamps, Arkansas
A power plant in Southwest Arkansas was faced with the challenge of meeting new "end of pipe" wastewater effluent limits for metals at the plant's two NPDES-permitted outfalls. FTN was retained to evaluate treatment alternatives and to design a cost-effective treatment system to remove metals from wastewater generated by cooling tower blowdown and low volume wastewater systems. The new treatment system combines wastewater streams and consists of three ponds and a constructed wetland system with a maximum system capicity of 1 MGD. Each pond was lined with a 60 mil HDPE liner due to the unavailability of suitable clay. FTN's innovative design concepts successfully applied the pond/constructed wetland system to a steam electric station for metal removal. The client was thus able to save $550,000 on an environmentally friendly system that has no energy consumption and requires miminal operator attention.
