As the result of a large storm event (up to 8 inches) over the Licking River Basin in Northern Kentucky in March 1997, an evaluation was completed to determine the extent of flooding which would have occurred in and around Falmouth and Butler, Kentucky, under two scenarios as compared to the experienced flooding. The scenarios were:
If Falmouth Reservoir, as described in the Definite Project Report on Falmouth Reservoir dated January 1942, had been in place during the March 1997 flood,
If the 5 main reservoirs described in the Licking River Basin, Kentucky, Interim Reconnaissance Report dated September 1990, would have been in place during the March 1997 flood, and
If the 6 smaller reservoirs described in the Licking River Basin, Kentucky, Interim Reconnaissance Report dated September 1990, would have been in place during the March 1997 flood.
Falmouth, Kentucky is located at the junction of the South Fork Licking River and the Main Fork Licking River. Butler is located on the Main Fork Licking River downstream of Falmouth. The analysis included developing a main hydrologic model (HEC-1) of the Licking River watershed, excluding the portion upstream and controlled by Cave Run Dam, and then modifying that model to represent the conditions with the reservoirs in place. Hydraulic models (HEC-2) of the Main Fork Licking River (from just upstream of Falmouth to downstream of Butler) and South Fork Licking River (from its confluence with the Main Fork upstream approximately 2.4 miles) were also developed based on existing information.
