Wet Weather Monitoring for TMDL Nonpoint Source Evaluation in the Yazoo River Basin
Mississippi
FTN/WLBE Joint Venture was selected to collect wet weather samples for TMDL development in the Yazoo River Basin, MS. FTN/WLBE is collecting water quality data for baseline and wet weather events and continuous in situ data. Six sampling stations representing different basin characteristics are being monitored using automated sampling and data logging hardware and software over a large portion of the Mississippi Delta. Sampling activities require coordination between different sampling parties to sample wet weather events of varying frequency and duration while meeting holding time requirements for chemical analyses. The project involves modification of existing technology to address difficult automated sampling problems. Protocols for routine data downloading, QA review, and trouble shooting were developed and implemented. FTN/WLBE provided review and comments for the QAPP developed by MDEQ.Additional sampling and monitoring activities include:
- Routine monitoring of all sampling stations to establish baseline, low flow conditions for each waterbody.
- Intensive monitoring of each station for fecal coliform bacteria. Sampling takes place during separate month low flow and high flow periods. The sampling is designed to meet stringent holding time requirement. It will provide data on which to base waterbody compliance with state water quality standards.
