MDEQ Watershed Implementation Plan Support
Mississippi
As part of FTN's support of the MDEQ basin management program, FTN drafted watershed implementation plans for 11 Mississippi priority waterbodies: Bogue Chitto Creek; Buttahatchee River; Luxapallila Creek; Bear Creek; Bee Lake; Big Sunflower River; Coldwater River; Hickahala Creek; Lake Washington; Tchula Lake; and Deer Creek. This process involved interacting with the Basin Management and Watershed Implementation teams to identify issues and management activities. Major headings of the plans included:
- Vision statement;
- Mission statement;
- Watershed implementation team;
- Watershed description;
- Stakeholder interests;
- Water resources;
- Watershed management actions;
- Education and outreach activities;
- Evaluation; and
- Plan revision.
FTN also drafted a guidance manual for developing Mississippi watershed implementation plans, and developed and conducted training for Basin Management and Watershed Implementation Team leaders. The plans and the guidance manual addressed the nine key elements of watershed implementation plans identified by EPA:
1. Watershed description and background;
2. Implementation;
3. Project goals;
4. Project costs;
5. Education and outreach;
6. Implementation schedule;
7. Milestones;
8. Adaptations and revisions; and
9. Monitoring.
