Steel Mill Wastewater pH and TSS Treatment System
Fort Smith, Arkansas

FTN assisted an Arkansas steel manufacturer with the study of issues related to its NPDES discharge. The primary concern for this company was pH and total suspended solids (TSS). The pH issues are mainly related to the use of lime and the byproducts produced in the steel making process. The study report recommended the installation of a neutralization system for controlling pH and the development of various Best Management Practices (BMPs) for reducing the concentration of suspended solids.

The company accepted the recommendations and commissioned FTN to prepare design documents (plans and specifications) for the pH neutralization treatment system. This design was completed in the summer of 2004 and construction was completed in 2005.

In general, the treatment system consisted of a treatment basin, bar screen, recirculation pump station, chemical feed system, effluent flow measuring structure, water quality instrumentation, and a PLC control system.
